Commencement of ECCU/BAICO Health Insurance Support Fund

The Governments of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union announce that, on 18 May 2011, the ECCU/BAICO Health Insurance Support Fund commenced operation.

What is the Fund?
The Fund has been established and funded by the Governments of the ECCU in order to provide financial assistance to persons with unpaid but valid claims under the following Health Insurance Policies issued by British American Insurance Company Limited (“BAICO”):

  • Mediflex Plus Standard and Deluxe Plans
  • Mediflex Silver and Gold Group Insurance
  • Hospital and Surgical Insurance (Adult and Juvenile)
  • Personal Accident Income Replacer
  • Hospital & Surgical – Cancer
  • Mediflex Hospital – Instant Issue (Hospital and Surgical version only)
  • Sickness and Accident Policy – Instant Issue
  • Super Shield Cancer Coverage

The Fund will not cover claims under any other BAICO policies, including annuity or investment policies, even if the funds are required to meet medical needs.  The ECCU Governments are continuing to work on solutions with respect to other BAICO policies.

Qualifying for assistance from the Fund
To receive assistance, the person who is entitled to be paid the amount of the approved claim must make an Application to the Fund, and Applications must meet the Fund’s Eligibility Criteria.  In general, the Health Insurance Claim must have been:

  • accepted as a valid claim by BAICO; and
  • incurred by 18 June 2011 (for example, if your claim is for a doctor’s visit, you must have visited your doctor on or before 18 June 2011).  IMPORTANT: For Claims incurred between 19 May and 18 June 2011 inclusive, a person may apply to the Fund for assistance.  However, they will only receive a payment if all other Approved Applications and expenses have been paid.  Claims incurred on or after 19 June 2011 are not eligible to receive assistance from the Fund.

Please refer to the Fund Information Brochure, available here or your local branch office, for more information about the Fund.

Applications to the Fund must be submitted no later than 31 December 2011.

Orderly process for applications: from 18 May until 17 June 2011
We request that policyholders and insured persons observe the process outlined below during the first few weeks of the Fund’s operations in order to ensure the orderly administration of the Fund.

If you would like to make your Application early (ie before Friday 17 June), please visit your local BAICO Branch during the week indicated below.   From Saturday 18 June 2011 onwards, you may visit the branch to make your Application during office hours on any day.  The date on which you make your Application will not affect how much you receive, but if you visit the branch outside the allocated week, the staff will not be able to assist you at that time.
